First pan-Asian girl band hopes to make world Blush

HONG KONG - THEY'RE a long way from being the next Spice Girls or Pussycat Dolls, but five Asian women are hoping to take the world by storm in what is being billed as the first pan-Asian girl band.

Blush is made up of five girls from the Philippines, India, China, Japan and South Korea who beat hundreds of other pop star wannabes during a talent search across Asia last year.

After surviving weeks of gruelling training and an elimination process, the five are ready to make a big splash on the music scene - both in the East and the West - as they prepare for the release of their first single in May.

'We are hoping we can get global and touch everyone's heart out there with our music,' Alisha Budhrani from India told AFP in a recent interview as she took a break from dance practice in a Hong Kong studio.

'For us we are really happy that all of our countries can come together through music and we could go out there to show the diversity of Asia, how wonderful it is as a whole.'

'We got real different cultures, languages, dialects and (there are) all kind of crazy things going on in Asia,' said a self-assured Alisha, breaking into laughter with the other four girls, aged between 18 and 28.

The group's bid for superstardom may be a long shot, but they have been supported by an A-list of Los Angeles-based producers who have worked with top names like Lady Gaga, the Black Eyed Peas and Beyonce. -- AFP

From Girls' Generation to After School and T-ara, these girl groups can be seen flaunting their shapely legs in super-mini shorts and skirts in their music videos, TV performances and awards shows.

Girls' Generation arguably kick-started the trend with the catchy dance number from their hit song 'Genie'. Former DJ and now author of the book Seoulful Living, Tan Li Yi, noted that watching that music video was the first time she became impressed by a girl showing off her legs, even though in this case, it was nine of them.

In Japan where Girls' Generation made a successful debut in September, they even earned the nickname 'Beautiful Legs Group'. Their single 'Genie' sold an estimated 45,000 copies in the first week of its release, breaking the record for foreign artists debuting in Japan.

In Thailand, girls who have been copying this fashion trend by wearing skimpy shorts and skirts even got Thai public health authorities concerned due to the threat of dengue fever. They were advised to wear long pants to better protect themselves from mosquito bites.

Entertainment journalist Tan Chew Yen from the Chinese Central Integrated Newsroom reasoned that showing off legs allows these girl groups to maintain a healthier but nonetheless sexy image. It invites less controversy and criticism from concerned citizens as compared to showing cleavage, for example, due to their young fan base.

KARA, SNSD scoop awards

Popular Korean girl groups, KARA and Girls’ Generation have successfully entered the Japanese music scene. 

According to the annual ranking by Japan’s Oricon music chart, KARA has taken the No. 1 spot for the rookie artist with the best sales revenue.




Girl group KARA has so far released two singles, five albums and one DVD and have earned themselves an income of 1.3 billion yen ($15 million) in total sales. Girls’ Generation have released two singles, six albums and one DVD raking in a total income of 800 million yen ($9.5 million).


The rookie awards for highest album revenue per song title went to Girls’ Generation for their catchy songs “Gee” and “Genie.” The third position went to KARA for their song “Jumping.”

Japanese participant Naoko Enomoto, 29, an IT engineer from Singapore, stole the show with her slick and sprightly moves on the pole to emerge as the Pole Idol 2009 grand champion.

She has only been a pole dancer for six months but her 15-years training in ballet gave her an edge over the others.

Naoko who also does contemporary dance in Singapore was speechless when she was named the top winner.

“It was definitely difficult when I ventured into pole dancing but I was inspired to learn the dance after watching a video of World Pole Dance Champion 2009 Felix Cane.

“When I first started I had bruises on my legs. It was painful because you have to learn how to slide up and down and grip your legs on the pole.

“It was a small sacrifice to make but the constant hours of practicing made me better as a pole dancer,” said the soft spoken Naoko who only sent in a video entry of herself for eligibility to the contest.

Australian Samantha Lee, 27 who also works in Singapore as a dance instructor teaching jazz, hip hop and salsa was first runner-up.

Naoko will be the Malaysian representative to the Asian Pole Summit in November.

JAKARTA - FILMMAKERS in Indonesia say they would stick to their plans to fly in a top Japanese porn star to act in a local comedy.

Muslim leaders have blasted plans to bring out erotic film megastar Maria Ozawa, 23, popularly known as Miyabi, to play herself in the upcoming film, Menculik Miyabi (Kidnapping Miyabi).

But Maxima Productions general manager Adi Sudiadi said the firm would stick to plans to include Ozawa in the film, which tells the story of a group of university students who accidentally kidnap the starlet.

'We guarantee that Miyabi won't be playing in a porn film here. We will bring her here not as a porn star, but purely for a comedy,' Mr Sudiadi said. 'Miyabi is well-known to Indonesians...We are expecting her to attract a lot of spectators here.

'We are also trying to fix Miyabi's image by showing she can be more than just a porn star,' he said, adding that no final agreement had been reached with Ozawa to act in the film.

Indonesian Council of Ulema chairman Amidhan slammed the choice of Ozawa - who has gained notoriety in Japan's porn industry, thanks to her Canadian-Japanese looks - as a threat to the moral health of the country's youth. 'Even if the film isn't pornographic, it is very dangerous for our young people, particularly if they become fans of this porn actress and become curious enough to watch her films,' he said. 'We have to be firm and not let rubbish into our country. This is about Indonesia's reputation as the world's most populous Muslim country.'

Nearly 90 per cent of Indonesia's 234 million people are Muslim.
